Bou El Mogdad
Tour details
Bou El Mogdad
Located between the Sahara and the large Guinean tropical forest of the South, Senegal shelters 4 rivers. The most important of them is the Senegal River. Vast Savana, the 100 year old baobab trees, palm plantations and luxuriant vegetation translate the beauty of these West African landscapes. You also get to discover the Senegalese villages.
From the unforgettable atmosphere of Saint Louis, the former capital of Senegal and a world heritage site of UNESCO today, to the old colonial counters of Dagana, this is a trip you will not forget. You can discover the bird sanctuary of Djoudj, and observe Richard Toll with its sugar cane plantation bordering incredible constructions of the ‘Baron Roger'. You can also meet Wolofs and Toucouleurs, the ethnics with different customs and habits according to their membership in Mauritania. You will surely enjoy Podor, which sheltered a sanctuary of elephants in the past.
- Boarding on the Bou El Mogdad, where you will be received by the crew with a welcome cocktail.
- Installation in cabins.
- Departure in the afternoon for a city tour in order to discover the city of Saint Louis, a World Heritage site of UNESCO. You should indulge in the traditional atmosphere, admire the finely decorated balconies of the beautiful colonial style houses, and follow the gradual yellow-earth shading offered by the streets according to the position of the sun. The north district of the island is separated from the south by the governance and by the Faidherbe Square. Also in the island: the municipality, the courthouse (first trial held in 1875), the hospital (since 1827), a particular yellow-earth building, the young girl's high school Ameth Fall, which takes up the ancient hospital dating 1840 and the famous Faidherbe Bridge (500 m long) built in 1897.
- Visit to the fishermen's village where you can watch an outrigger canoe leaving for sea fishing. A visit to the Muslim Cemetery in the Guet Ndar district, where graves are made of pickets and fishing net. Then you'll pass through the Ndar market situated on the Barbarie Tongue.
- Dinner and night on board.
Sunday (St. Louis - Diama - Tiguet (Djoudj):
- We plough through the Senegal River until the dam of Diama. This obstruction represents the limit of the salt waters which it prevents going back.
- Lunch on board and up the river along the Diawling Reserve through which you can catch a glimpse of numerous species of birds.
- A stop at the entrance of Gorom ‘Bolong' that allows access to the Bird Park of Djoudj. You'll reach the wharf by the barge annexed to the boat. Created in 1971, this reserve has been classified as a World Human Heritage of UNESCO and represents the world's third bird park. It reaches out across 12,000 hectares on the delta of Senegal River and exercises an irresistible attraction on the birds coming from Africa and Europe. From November to March, three million birds gather here to spend the wintertime. Inside the park, you'll also find more than 20 different species of mammals.
- Departure for a journey on an outrigger canoe. With an idle motor, the outrigger canoe pushes into the heart of Djoudj while amazing scenes ensue; flamingos taking off in thick rows, pelicans taking flight and cormorants ducking. A strange and extraordinary show.
- Back on boat. Dinner and night on board, on the big branch of the river.
Monday (Tiguet - Diaouar - Richard Toll):
- We'll keep on navigating up the river coast by Senegal and Mauritania. Senegalese banks are used for rice culture, while those of the Mauritania area remain uncultivated. Here, you can catch a sight of some warthogs.
- Pass by Rosso, the border city between Senegal and Mauritania, where outrigger canoes and a ferry boat go across with people, animals and vehicles.
- In the evening we'll reach Richard Toll, which takes its name from the colonial age where, in 1822, a Frenchman performed trials on cultivation methods.
- Visit to the sugarcane factory (10,000 hectares), the principal source of yield of the locality. Depending on the season, we'll push into the heart of the plantation in order to attend the show of the burn beating to the sunset. This process enables to stave off the local fauna and to eliminate cumbersome foliage that impedes the cutters while cultivation.
- Dinner and night on board.
Tuesday (Richard Toll - Dagana - Palm Grove)
- Discovery of "la Folie du Baron Roger", a French style castle, closed to public and surrounded
by Banco constructions, the typical architecture of the region. We'll reach the boat passing through Richard Toll market on foot.
- Navigation until the mango plantation bordering the village of Goumel, in an oxbow. Typical lunch, Fish rice or "Tiep bou djen" in the middle of the mango cultivations and palms on Senegal River's banks.
- Departure with the barge in the direction of the Wolof village of Dagana, the capital of Walo country. Visit to the ancient colonial trading post that still preserves the ruins of an ancient fortress and of some shops. Visit to Dagana market where, at that time, the Banny and the Ponty carried Arabic gum or carried soldiers. Here, we'll have also the opportunity to meet dyers presenting us the art of Batik. Come back to the boat at sunset.
- Dinner and night on board.
Wednesday (Palm Grove - Thiangaye):
- With the barge we'll reach the banks for a walk of about 2 km in the forest of Goumel. Visit
a traditional Peulh village, made by oblong thatched huts built by women. Discover lots of tree species along the banks here.
- Return to the boat.
- Navigation up the river to get into the heart of African Sahel, in the Toucouleurs Kingdom. The beauty of landscape and the peaceful waters are only touched by some children, washerwomen with multicoloured loinclothes and some herds of animals wandering along the banks.
- Lunch on board.
- Get into a little branch of the river on the barge. Stop and visit the Toucouleur village which made entirely of mud, in equilibrium on the steep shores of the Senegal River. These villages are more ancient than other Toucouleurs villages, dating from the XIII Century. Trip to Saldé and Moor village located on the other bank of the river.
- Back on board and departure for a dinner "méchoui" (grilled mutton) on the river, by oil lamp light.
- Night on board.
Thursday (Branch of Thiangaye - Podor)
- Navigation until another Toucouleurs village. Visit and back on board.
- Lunch on board while still navigating. At the turning point of the two largest branches of the river, you'll catch sight of Podor, an ancient trade post during the French settlement. Nowadays, trade activities are no longer performed along the river and its banks wait patiently for your arrival. Houses where trade was carried out, bordering the river, with their big internal courtyards and their warehouses that stocked Arabic gum, firewood, ivory and slaves, are today a vestige of the remote past. You'll visit this fortress, just restored, built by Faidherbe, and you'll relive a piece of this history.
- In the evening, take a stroll to the market and in the calm alleys or just relax on the steps of one of these ancient houses to admire the sunset on the Mauritanian shores.
- Dinner and night on board.
Friday (Podor - St. Louis):
- Breakfast. End of cruise
